Ricky Hui 許冠英

The Contract (1978)

I saw its trailers long ago so it was obvious that it was another masterpiece of the brothers. I was glad to hear the song at the beginning. I heard it with Ricky before but didn't know it was from this film. I have to admit, I like Ricky's version more and it's the same with all the songs I heard with Ricky.

The opening scene didn't really work for me with Michael and the other dancer, but Sam looked hilarious. I found all of the following ones great. I absolutely loved Michael's scene with the archer, it was simply brilliant. Again his facial expression was priceless.

Naturally for me the long expected scene was Ricky's entrance and I couldn't believe my eyes, I found him beautiful there. Yes, you read it correctly, I said beautiful. I love to see him smile, it brightens up his face and it makes him beautiful. I never saw anyone smile so sweetly, he has such a lovely, kind and friendly face when he smiles. I'm always surprised by the difference between his serious and happy expressions. He should smile more often. Sorry, I got carried away. Again.

The scene with the Feel Surround TV is outstanding. I just couldn't stop laughing. I started to laugh when it blew up and by the time Michael finished his scene with the glue I was completely knocked out. Such funny scenes should be banned, because if laugh could kill, I would be dead already.

The game show scene was a bit long for me but it showed a really good picture of human stupidness and greediness. A very good picture indeed.

Michael in a woman's costume looked hilarious in the breaking in sequence, every moment of it was funny, although my heart stopped beating every time Ricky wanted to fall, not to mention when he got stuck in the safe.

Michael was his usual, extremely funny self in the dancing scene, and he danced quite well. It's a pity Ricky got knocked out, it would have been a treat to see him dance.

I didn't expect to see the Feel Surround TV set again, but it was a rather funny presentation. It made me think if that TV really existed, what kind of films people would watch most often. I know what *I* would and who would I cast in the leading role...

I have to admit that I don't like magicians (Cannot stand clowns either, and don't like Circus in general. I'm especially allergic to the animal productions. Making them jump through burning things or elephants on two feet - I'd rather not comment it).  So, although this kind of showbiz world is very far from me, in this case it didn't matter because this film was pure entertainment and is among my favourites. It was a really good caricature of showbusiness and human nature in general. And I just loved my cute little Edison...
